Three Days in Pittsburgh: Baseball, Riverwalks, and Great Eats

Tammy and I recently took a quick three-day getaway to Pittsburgh, and what a great weekend it turned out to be! We hit the road from Lexington, KY around 8 a.m. Friday morning, and after an easy drive, arrived in Pittsburgh around 3 p.m. Our home base for the weekend was the Hyatt Place Pittsburgh North Shore, which turned out to be the perfect location—right in the heart of the action.
After checking in, we made our way over to PNC Park to watch the Atlanta Braves take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Let me tell you, PNC Park is easily one of the most beautiful baseball stadiums I’ve ever visited. With its open views of the city skyline and the Allegheny River, it’s a real gem for any baseball fan. Unfortunately, the Braves have been in a bit of a slump lately, and the Pirates edged them out with a 3–2 win that night.
Saturday, we were up early and set off to explore the city on foot. We started with a peaceful walk along the North Shore Riverwalk, which runs alongside the Allegheny River. Along the way, we took in several powerful and moving memorials, including the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, and the sweet and nostalgic Mister Rogers Memorial. We also passed by Acrisure Stadium, home of the Steelers, and of course took another look at beautiful PNC Park in the daylight.
For lunch, we grabbed an Uber over to the Original Oyster House, a true Pittsburgh institution. We feasted on clam strips, fried oysters, and a generous plate of fish and chips. Everything was absolutely delicious—if you're ever in town, this place is a must.
After lunch, we continued exploring—this time around the South Shore, and even made it to the Point of Convergence, where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together to form the mighty Ohio River. It’s a scenic and symbolic spot that really captures the natural beauty of Pittsburgh.
From there, we made our way back across the Three Rivers Heritage Trail via the pedestrian path on the Fort Duquesne Bridge, soaking in even more gorgeous river views. Once back at the hotel, we changed into our Braves gear and headed out for another night at PNC Park.
Saturday night’s game was a nail-biter. After 11 intense innings, the Braves pulled off a 3–2 win—redemption after Friday night’s loss!
Post-game, we weren’t quite ready to call it a night. We stopped by Burgatory on North Shore Drive—fantastic vibe, friendly staff, and some of the best onion rings and cheeseburgers we’ve had in a long time. Later, we wandered into Tequila Cowboy, where we shared some loaded nachos and chicken wings that hit the spot. Stuffed and satisfied, we headed back to our room to rest up for the drive home on Sunday.
All in all, it was a fantastic weekend in a truly underrated city. Pittsburgh surprised us in the best way—it’s clean, walkable, full of history, and packed with great food and even better baseball. If you’re a sports fan or just love a good weekend getaway, I can’t recommend PNC Park and the city of Pittsburgh enough. Catch a game or two—you won’t regret it.
