The Power and Fear of Kentucky’s Spring Storms

Springtime in Kentucky is a season of renewal, but it also brings some of the most powerful and terrifying storms of the year. Last night was a vivid reminder of that. At 2:15 a.m., Tammy and I were jolted awake by our cell phones screaming at us to take cover. The wind roared outside, rain pounded against the house, and the eerie sound of branches snapping off trees filled the air. It was one of those surreal moments where time seems to slow down, and you realize just how small we are against the forces of nature.

Thankfully, we made it through the storm unscathed, and so did our home. We’ve also checked in with Ryan and Katelin, and they are safe as well. But wow—what a scary morning. The storm dumped 2.06 inches of rain on us, with another 0.76 inches expected over the next several hours. When the ground is already saturated, and the sump pump is working overtime, you can’t help but hold your breath and hope everything holds up.

There’s something humbling about these storms. They remind us of nature’s raw power and unpredictability. One moment, everything is calm, and the next, you’re scrambling to check the radar, find a safe place, and listen to the chaos outside. It’s a night we won’t soon forget, but for now, we’re grateful for safety, a sturdy home, and a new day ahead. Stay safe out there, friends—springtime in Kentucky is always an adventure.
