playoff baseball

Okay for all of you casual baseball fans, now is the time to ramp it up. Teams fighting for their playoff lives, makes the last month of the season just as exciting as the playoffs themselves. Of course, if your team(s) have already been eliminated or on the cusp off being eliminated you might not be as excited about the end of the season, but for the true fans of the game we can still find joy in these last few weeks of baseball.

Coach Keith Madison, my friend and former baseball coach from the University of Kentucky (1979-2003) and has worked with Score International where Coach Madison has spread the gospel on dozens of short term baseball trips to the Dominican Republic. Coach Madison has literally taken hundreds of baseball folks to the Dominican Republic to share his love of Jesus and baseball to this tiny island nation. Coach Madison is a fantastic baseball mind and shared with me this thought about the length of the baseball season. Every team wins 60 games and every team loses 60 games but what separates them, is what they do with the other 42 games. Think about that, the worse teams will still win about 60 games and the best teams will still lose 60 games. Crazy right. I had never thought about this in that manner. Still to think that you can lose 60 games during a seasons and still be the World Champions. Baseball sure is a crazy game.

Youth and amateur baseball is so different. We play in leagues where you only play your opponents a couple of times and it is usually spread out over a few weeks. In tournament play you typically only play your opponent once during an event. Even high school ball you only play your league rivals a couple times each. In the last few years locally they play each other on back to back days which is more like a mini series anyway. Baseball is meant to be played in series. Just look at any Major League Baseball Team's schedule they play 3-4 game series all season long. Then with the exception of the single wild card game, you play in the Divisional series and if you win that you play in the League Series and of course if you win that you play in the World Series. Baseball is a much different game than other team sports. I truly believe in football and basketball the better team wins almost all of the time. However, in baseball, the game is so complex that an inferior team can win from time to time. Remember that the worse teams are still winning about 60 games per season.

Anyway, I am super excited about late September and October baseball. Hoping my team makes it but if they don't I will still watch because to me baseball is the greatest game on the planet. Here's to another great year of baseball coming to its fantastic finish. If you can't get excited about this part of the season you might want to have your pulse checked. Last day of the regular season is Sunday, October 3rd. October 5th is the American League Wildcard Game and October 6th is the National League Wildcard Game...you can bet I will be watching. Then the American League Divisional Series begins on the 7th and the National League Divisional Series benison the 8th...Let's Go! Can't wait. Good luck to your team. Man I love this game!!!!
