not a washington nationals fan

I am not a Nationals fan, I am not a Nationals fan, I am not a Nationals fan - I actually would root against them versus every Major League team except the Cardinals or the Yankees. However, I am a Baseball fan and what they did the over the past 4 weeks has been amazing. If anyone says otherwise they can go pound rocks. Congrats to Washington Nationals as they definitely gave us a great ride.

I am happy for my mother who lives in Richmond, VA and has become a huge Washington Nationals fan. I haven't heard her so passionate about baseball in a long time. As we put our bats and gloves away for the off season I wanted to tip my cap to Dave Martinez and crew for such a great run from June through October. Wow what a ride.

My mom came to visit for a week or so around my 50th birthday. During her visit on September 3rd we were watching the Nationals vs the Mets and the Nationals were still really out of contention (obviously not mathematically) but most baseball people had written them off. We were watching the Mets beating the Nationals late in a game and I even laughed (being a Braves fan) that the Nationals were about to be eliminated from the playoffs. The lowly Mets were winning 5 - 4 going into the 9th inning. The Mets banged out a bunch of hits and the Nationals made an error and allow the Mets to score 5 runs, extending their lead 10-4. I was laughing at the Nationals and being all smug (remember I'm a Braves fan) and happy to see the National getting beat. Well in baseball "it isn't over till it's over" says (American baseball legend Yogi Berra 1973). The Nationals ended up banging out 7 hits with the last one being a walk off home run by Kurt Suzuki and won that game 11-10.

I didn't recognize how important that game was for the Nationals. I should have known that night that the Washington Nationals were a special bunch but I didn't let it sink in until today. Wow what a summer and what a great October of fantastic baseball. Who is gonna do it next year. I am already excited to see where all the free agents end up and hoping for just as an exciting playoff in 2020.
